Stillwater River Canoeing

Yesterday Kevin and I took our Old Town "Penobscot" canoe out on the Stillwater River.  The Stillwater flows past Old Town, ME and joins the Penobscot River in Orono, ME.  The rumors about the river are that when the government was deciding which land would be allocated to the Native Americans, the plan was that the minority group would have rights to any island parcels.  Self-servingly, the government decided to call this branch of the Penobscot the Stillwater, thus making it a separate river.  In doing so, the land which is now occupied by the University of ME was no longer considered an island (surrounded by the Penobscot).  The top picture is the view looking back toward Orono.
We got several nibbles on our lures and eventually caught a couple small mouth bass when we happened upon a feeding frenzy, which we think was the result of a mayfly hatch.  The fall colors were spectacular and we even had a close viewing of a bald eagle!

After our paddle, we filled a growler at the Black Bear Brewery (Orono's very own microbrewery) where we happened upon a bluegrass band and several folks we have met throughout the last several weeks.  All in all a nice day in our small town!
